Port is one of the world's greatest fortified wines, produced exclusively in the Douro Valley by stopping fermentation with grape spirit, preserving the wine's natural sweetness while increasing its alcohol to around 19–20%. The result is a style capable of ageing for decades, with an extraordinary range of expressions shaped by maturation rather than grape variety alone.
The principal styles each reveal a different side of Port. Ruby Port is aged in large vessels to preserve youthful fruit and vibrant berry character. Tawny Port matures for years in smaller oak casks, developing aromas of dried fruit, roasted nuts, caramel and spice through slow oxidative ageing. Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) comes from a single harvest and offers much of the depth of Vintage Port while being ready to enjoy upon release. Vintage Port, produced only in exceptional years, is bottled young to mature in bottle for decades, gradually evolving remarkable complexity and finesse.
Our selection focuses exclusively on Van Zellers & Co., one of the Douro's oldest Port families, whose history dates back to the 17th century. Today the estate combines centuries of tradition with meticulous vineyard work, producing Ports that emphasise balance, freshness and terroir alongside the richness for which the category is renowned.
Among the collection, the XIX Rare Port Collection represents a remarkable journey through historic styles and exceptionally limited releases, showcasing the depth, elegance and longevity that only carefully matured Ports can achieve. Equally unique is the Ocean Aged Port, matured beneath the Atlantic Ocean where constant temperature, darkness and gentle underwater movement create a slow and distinctive evolution, resulting in a wine of exceptional refinement and rarity.
From youthful Ruby to complex Tawny, from collectible Vintage Ports to the historic XIX Rare Port Collection and the extraordinary Ocean Aged Port, Van Zellers & Co. demonstrates the remarkable diversity of Port. Together these wines celebrate one of Portugal's greatest winemaking traditions while offering collectors and enthusiasts the opportunity to discover some of the category's most distinctive and exclusive expressions.
