Large-format bottles have long been associated with Champagne's greatest celebrations, but their importance extends far beyond their impressive appearance. As bottle size increases, the ratio of wine to oxygen decreases, allowing Champagne to mature more slowly and evenly. This results in finer bubbles, greater freshness, enhanced complexity and exceptional ageing potential, making large formats highly prized by collectors and sommeliers alike.
The Magnum (1.5L) is widely regarded as the ideal ageing format, often producing the most balanced expression of a Champagne. Beyond Magnum, larger bottles such as Jeroboam (3L), Rehoboam (4.5L), Methuselah (6L), Salmanazar (9L), Balthazar (12L) and Nebuchadnezzar (15L) are produced in far smaller quantities and are typically reserved for special occasions or limited collector releases.
Within our collection, several grower-producers embrace large-format bottlings to showcase the remarkable ageing potential of their wines. Robert Moncuit offers Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs in Magnum, allowing the chalk-rich Chardonnay of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger to develop even greater depth, finesse and mineral complexity over time. Clandestin presents its terroir-driven Champagnes in Magnum, where the slower evolution beautifully enhances the purity and precision of the Kimmeridgian limestone vineyards of the Côte des Bar. Benjamin Petit also releases selected Champagnes in Magnum, highlighting the elegance and character of individual vintages while demonstrating the benefits of extended bottle ageing.
For Champagne enthusiasts, large formats are more than collector's pieces—they represent the finest expression of the winemaker's craft. Their slower maturation, remarkable balance and ability to age gracefully for decades make them some of the most rewarding bottles in the world of Champagne.
