Portuguese sparkling

Portugal's sparkling wines are among the country's most exciting yet least discovered wine styles. Produced using the traditional method, they combine vibrant acidity, refined mousse and exceptional value, with a strong emphasis on indigenous grape varieties and terroir.

At the heart of Portuguese sparkling wine lies Bairrada, the country's benchmark region for traditional-method espumante. Its cool Atlantic climate and clay-limestone soils preserve freshness and mineral precision, while native varieties such as Bical, Maria Gomes, Arinto and Cercial create elegant sparkling wines with fine bubbles, citrus purity and remarkable ageing potential.

Although Bairrada is best known for Baga, the region's iconic red grape has also become an increasingly important component in premium rosé and blanc de noirs sparkling wines. Its naturally high acidity and structure make it exceptionally well suited to traditional-method production, producing wines with depth, finesse and longevity.

The modern renaissance of the region has been driven in part by the Baga Friends movement, a collective of producers dedicated to preserving old vineyards, promoting native varieties and showcasing the true potential of Baga. Their work has transformed international perceptions of both the grape and Bairrada, establishing the region as one of Portugal's leading fine wine appellations.

Among these producers, Vadio represents the new generation of Bairrada, crafting elegant sparkling wines that express the purity of the region's Atlantic terroir through minimal-intervention winemaking and a deep respect for indigenous varieties.

Today, Portuguese sparkling wines offer a distinctive alternative to more familiar sparkling regions—defined not by imitation, but by freshness, authenticity and a unique sense of place. From the limestone soils of Bairrada to the character of its native grape varieties, they represent one of Portugal's finest expressions of terroir.
