Côte des Bar is Champagne's southernmost subregion and one of the most dynamic areas of the modern Grower Champagne movement. Located in the Aube department, closer to Chablis than to Reims, it is defined by Kimmeridgian limestone soils—ancient layers of limestone and fossil-rich clay that also form the foundation of Chablis. Combined with a slightly warmer climate, these soils produce wines with greater fruit concentration while maintaining vibrant acidity and striking mineral freshness.
Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety of Côte des Bar, producing Blanc de Noirs with generous texture, ripe orchard fruit, citrus and pronounced mineral tension. In recent years, Chardonnay has also gained recognition, offering a more saline and energetic interpretation than the classic Côte des Blancs style.
Our collection is represented by Clandestin, one of the region's most exciting terroir-focused grower-producers. Working exclusively with organically farmed vineyards and minimal intervention in the cellar, Clandestin highlights the diversity of Côte des Bar through single-site expressions. Boréal 22 and Austral 22 showcase two distinct interpretations of Blanc de Noirs, revealing how individual vineyard exposures and Kimmeridgian soils shape Pinot Noir into wines of remarkable purity, texture and precision. Les Passagers Fiole 23 Blanc de Blancs demonstrates another side of the region, proving that Chardonnay from Côte des Bar can deliver exceptional freshness, salinity and mineral complexity while retaining the generosity characteristic of the area's terroir.
Today, Côte des Bar has become a symbol of Champagne's new generation—where small grower-producers focus on organic viticulture, vineyard identity and authentic terroir expression. It is a region that continues to redefine what Champagne can be beyond the historic heartland of Reims and the Côte des Blancs.
