Vallée de la Marne

Vallée de la Marne

Stretching along the Marne River from Épernay towards Château-Thierry, the Vallée de la Marne is one of Champagne's most diverse subregions. Its mix of chalk, clay and limestone soils, combined with a slightly milder climate, creates wines that are generous, expressive and beautifully balanced. While all three Champagne varieties are cultivated here, the region is particularly recognised as the historic home of Pinot Meunier, a grape that thrives in the valley's cooler, clay-rich vineyards and contributes aromatic fruit, texture and early approachability.

Today, the Vallée de la Marne has become an important centre of the Grower Champagne movement, where producers increasingly focus on single vineyards, low-intervention winemaking and expressing the individuality of their terroirs rather than blending for a consistent house style.

Our collection highlights this philosophy through Girard-Bonnet Recueil Extrait No.3 Rosé, an uncommon expression of Rosé Champagne produced entirely from Meunier. Rather than relying on Pinot Noir, this cuvée demonstrates the remarkable character of Meunier—offering vibrant aromas of wild berries, red currants and blood orange, supported by lively acidity, fine mousse and impressive freshness. It is a distinctive interpretation that showcases the grape's elegance and the growing confidence of producers exploring Champagne beyond its traditional styles.

The Vallée de la Marne proves that Pinot Meunier is far more than a blending component. In the hands of ambitious grower-producers, it delivers Champagnes with remarkable personality, fruit purity and a unique sense of place, making the valley one of the region's most exciting areas to explore today.
