Trigny is one of the key villages of the Massif de Saint-Thierry, located north-west of Reims. Its vineyards lie on gently sloping terrain with sandy, clay-rich and well-drained soils, creating particularly favourable conditions for Pinot Noir and Meunier.
The history of Trigny is closely connected to the Abbey of Saint-Thierry. The land was donated to the abbey in the 9th century, and the village’s name appears definitively in a charter of 963. Viticulture in the wider Massif has an even longer history, with vineyards documented from the Middle Ages and wines exported from the region as early as the 12th century.
Today, Trigny covers around 190 hectares of vines, with Meunier representing almost half of the plantings, followed by Pinot Noir and a smaller proportion of Chardonnay. This high proportion of black grapes gives the village a naturally vinous, fruity and structured identity.
Trigny Pinot Noir tends to show red and dark berries, subtle spice and savoury depth, while Meunier brings softer fruit, floral notes and generosity. Chardonnay, although less widely planted, can show fresh citrus, delicate floral aromas and a saline finish.
The village suffered greatly from phylloxera, the First World War and the economic crises of the early 20th century. Its vineyard was gradually rebuilt after the Second World War, with the Trigny cooperative established in the early 1950s, marking an important stage in the revival of local wine culture.
Trigny is therefore a distinctive Champagne terroir shaped by sand, clay, black grapes and freshness, producing Champagnes with an individual, elegant and distinctly vinous personality.
Marisson is a distinctive single vineyard in Trigny, in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, expressing the particular character of this lesser-known Champagne terroir. The parcel is planted with old Pinot Noir vines dating from 1978, rooted in notably sandy soils. The sandy soil gives the Pinot Noir a more elegant, lifted and fresh profile, while the old vines contribute concentration and depth. This combination creates a wine that is less about sheer power and more about purity, tension and precise fruit. In the glass, Marisson shows red and dark berries, citrus peel, subtle spice and flinty, savoury notes. The palate is energetic and structured, with fine tannins, mineral tension and a long, dry finish.Marisson demonstrates the individuality of Trigny: old Pinot Noir, sandy soils and a cool northern terroir creating a Champagne that is precise, vinous and mineral rather than simply powerful.
2020 is a particularly expressive vintage for Pinot Noir in Trigny, combining the warmth and early ripening of the year with the distinctive sandy soils of the Massif de Saint-Thierry. The result is a Pinot Noir with more concentration and ripeness than a cooler vintage, but without losing freshness. For Benjamin Petit’s 2020 Pinot Noir, the expression is especially personal: the wine comes from the Marisson parcel, planted in 1978 on sandy soil, and is vinified in a new 5-hL oak barrel. It is 100% Pinot Noir and bottled as Brut Nature, with only 380 bottles produced. The producer describes it as vivid, substantial and racy, with distinctive notes of grilled bread and flint. The 2020 vintage adds ripe fruit, depth and texture, while the sandy Trigny terroir keeps the wine relatively light on its feet and energetic. The oak gives additional structure and savoury depth rather than masking the fruit.Typical profile: red and dark fruit, grilled notes, flint, subtle spice, firm freshness, mineral tension and a dry, saline finish.
