Companhia Profetas e Villões

Companhia Profetas e Villões is a small, highly original Portuguese project rooted between the Atlantic islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, founded by Nuno Faria in collaboration with renowned winemaker António Maçanita. Born during the 2020 lockdown, the project set out to rediscover and elevate the unique, nearly forgotten viticulture of these remote islands.

The name reflects the historic rivalry between the islands - “Profetas” (Porto Santo) and “Villões” (Madeira) - symbolizing a bridge between their cultures, traditions, and terroirs. Working with old vines and rare indigenous varieties such as Caracol and Listrão, often grown in extreme, wind-swept conditions on sandy and limestone soils, the project highlights one of Portugal’s most singular wine landscapes.

Production is small and experimental, with a focus on minimal intervention and expressing the raw, saline character shaped by the Atlantic Ocean. The wines are distinctive, textural, and deeply mineral - capturing the wild identity of these islands and offering a truly unique perspective on Portuguese wine.
