Azores Wine Company Terrantez do Pico 2024

Style:
A refined and saline-driven volcanic white, combining elegance with tension and minerality. Fresh yet textured, with a distinctive Atlantic character.

Vineyard:
Located on Pico Island (Azores), sourced from old vines planted in volcanic rock fissures close to the Atlantic Ocean. Basalt soils and extreme maritime conditions ensure low yields, high acidity, and pronounced salinity.

Winery:
Hand-harvested grapes, whole-bunch pressed and fermented with native yeasts. Vinified in a mix of stainless steel and used oak, followed by lees aging to enhance texture and complexity.

Production:
~5000 bottles

Nose/Palate:

Citrus, bergamot, floral notes, iodine, and sea breeze aromas lead to a medium-bodied palate with vibrant acidity, a saline mineral-driven profile, citrus and herbal nuances, subtle texture, and a long, fresh, persistent finish.

Azores Wine Company

Azores Wine Company is a pioneering project based on the volcanic island of Pico, dedicated to reviving and redefining the wines of the Azores. Founded in 2014 by António Maçanita, Filipe Rocha, and Paulo Machado, the winery was born from a shared vision to restore nearly lost indigenous grape varieties and showcase the unique potential of this extreme Atlantic terroir.

Working in one of the most challenging wine regions in the world - where vines grow in black basalt soils, protected by traditional stone walls - the focus is on native grapes such as Arinto dos Açores, Verdelho, and the rare Terrantez do Pico. Their philosophy combines research, experimentation, and deep respect for tradition, aiming to bring authenticity and identity back to Azorean wines.

The wines are strikingly mineral, saline, and fresh, shaped by the influence of the ocean and volcanic soils. Azores Wine Company has quickly become one of Portugal’s most exciting modern projects - producing distinctive, small-production wines that capture the raw energy and uniqueness of island viticulture.
